PRE - PACKING FOR KENT ...

I depart from Holmes chapel next week to join a designer on an internship in Kent. I have to think carefully on what I am going to wear but then the dress code is casual so I don't have to make much effort. I was sorting out my clothes and taking a risk by taking clothes that I haven't worn for months.

The first outfit is fairly casual which will be handy considering I will be tackling difficult tasks. The top is from Asda, Skirt from Matalan, Necklace from Accessorize and the Scarf is from a small boutique in Antwer
p. It's cheap I know but everybody loves a good deal once in a while. The next outfit is slightly less casual but is suitable for a practical purpose. Top- Primark, Skirt - Matalan, and Necklace- Top shop
Outfit 3 is very casual and I think it will be suitable for a busy day at work. Top and skirt - Matalan, Necklace - Accessorize.

This is only a fraction of the clothes that I am intending to bring considering I am going for four weeks I must prepare myself.
Do you think I have done well with these outfit choices, simple and practical that's what I am going for. What do you think ?

CHANGING SOMETHING SO IT WORKS FOR YOU...

As you know we went to the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and we learnt many different skills when applying them to drawing. Even though the purpose of the tasks was to feel free I couldn't help working into the sketches I created because I thought they looked too flat on the page and lifeless. I worked into them adding some stitching and a contrast of black and white making the composition more dramatic. I ripped and tore up leaflets that related to the experience of being there so it summed up the day and was a guide to my inspiration. I kept the theme of journey and made my own little map of the day making it memorable for me because I don't look back on just pencil and paper.

RECORDING TUESDAY'S SHAPE DEVELOPMENT SESSION...

You might have known but I helped out some year 11's with cutting out shapes and then we had the task of sketching out the final product. I experimented with different media to use in my summer homework as independent research using different methods each time. I mainly used collage but interpreted more drawing that I would usually use. The first attempt I did at college layering up tissue paper, tags, magazines and then using stitching to outline the silhouette. The next attempt I used the garment but changed the prospective and placed it onto a model to make it realistic and quite liked how that looked still keeping the collage style throughout. I quite like the last attempt because it is so minimal and it really works together the colours and shapes to make the garment come alive. Which one is your favourite?

WHITWORTH ART GALLERY...

Today our little group of 10 went to the Whit worth art Gallery, Manchester, we expected more to turn up but they didn't. To start off we had a morning session with an artist that taught us some helpful tips whilst drawing which allowed me to let go and draw freely. Then in the afternoon we had a textiles workshop working with different media to try and create a garment. Out of both of the workshops I preferred the textile aspect because I still don't enjoy drawing but the artist made me like it a little bit better. For the drawing tasks we had to not look at the page, take our pencil off the page and had to draw around a map to show where our journey had been. Whereas, the textiles workshop involved sketching different features form the artwork in the gallery forming the human body and then applying tape and different media to shape designs on the floor.

US LAST YEAR...

Yesterday I helped out with the year 11 taster days creating paper shapes and dressing them on the mannequin. I worked with one team which I had circles to base their piece on and they came up with some really good ideas using 3d forms to portray the shape. I also took a quick glance at all the others and was really surprised at the creativity of what they were doing with the shapes making them into actual garments and folding them into each other.

FABRIC SWATCHES FROM SOHO...

In a previous post I was talking about collecting fabric swatches from Soho, London and thought I would share these with you! I managed to find some very interesting fabric that could be of good use to me in the 2nd year at college. Would you be interested in using any of these ?

DONT SAY NO TO ANYTHING FREE...

Last week when I attended to "New Designers" exhibition I collected a vast amount of business cards from various students as I was interested in the design or their choice of clothing. I used some of them for inspiration for the summer homework to recreate their work. I found this day very helpful to see what standard the work is at selected universities and it showcased the talent of many students.
